Following my feedback from my tutorial, I started to refine my ideas and stick to a selection of clarified systems.
To start this of I wanted to refine my use of colour throughout the whole book. I wanted to follow through with this idea of using different shades of red to represent the happiness against the theme of revenge. I took a deep red colour with the value of C=15 M=100 Y=100 K=0 and changed the capacity of the colour to 80% in the first chapter so that it became a lighter and softer red, the could represent the love and be a clear difference to the final chapter.
As mentioned David suggested using a black background to show the dark tones of the last chapter is something in which I attempted below, these two pages in which have important quotes on i thought would be a good test as the red writing that represents the revenge would sit well against the black, however overall I found the use of black too intense and a bit of an obvious choice. I wanted the last chapter to seem different but without it being too much in your face in which I felt the black sadly did.
The other idea in which I had for the second chapter was literally turning the whole text upside down, therefore you would actually have to turn the book upside down and read it backwards. In this way the book design itself became interactive and by reading it backwards showed the struggle of how Victor Frankenstein’s life had been flipped upside down from the first chapter to the last.
I am interested to see how this idea is received by David in my next tutorial as I am aware that the concept my not work well as a produced book and the idea may struggle to be translated correctly.
As the last chapter goes on, the struggle of Victor Frankensteins journey gets harder and harder and he struggles to continue on in many points, as I found this was an important part of the chapter I wanted to highlight this in someway. I decided repeat the text on top of the already standing text and lessen the opacity, the idea behind this was to give the impression that the text is almost shaking and make it harder to read, in the same was that Frankensteins struggle got harder.
I also wanted to play with the ides of size, and allow the importance of quotes to be more obvious as can been seen below. I wanted to again show how much this chapter differs from the first one. making the sense ‘wrestle for our lives’ bigger to show the state Frankenstein has got into, I also wanted to cross out the word lives as by reading the chapters it seems even though Frankenstein is alive, he has no life left in him. Again putting the quote in capitals to show its importance.
I refined my ideas to follow the following systems:
- Bold – Light Red = Happy
- BIG – Bold = Negatives that overpower the happiness (therefore bigger pt size)
- Text Breaking out of the format = Non Isolating
- Semi Bold – Dark Red = Negative
- BIG Bold – Dark Red = Important Negatives
- Smaller Justified text = More Isolating
