Illustration Brief – Creating a Person.

For the illustration brief we were instructed to think of the people whom would live In Geometrica and the day in the life in which they would go about. As a group we wanted to create a group of people who show the different negative and positive view points of people living in the city, showing the dystopian side of it as well as the utopian side in which it tries to portray.

I began by making a mind map of the people in which I thought would be best suited to living in Geometric, I thought that the young people who lived there would love the city and the changes in which have been made, along with this the new children that would start being born there would be designer babies as due to their beliefs that beauty reinforces the wellness of a society, slowly but surely the people of Geometrica start making sure the people in which live there are beautiful too, but at this stage there is only glimpses of what this might become. For people in which have lived their for a long time, they don’t think that this city has improved at all, the government of Geometrica is spending all their money on covering up the buildings that already stand, however not changing what goes on inside. Some people still believe that nothing has changed as they as still living the same mundane lives as before. With promotion of the city and the influx of tourism key for Geometrica, the repercussions of it becoming over populated and a dystopian city, could slowly become a possibility.

The person in which I have created for the brief is Peter Plain, Who lives in a dystopian City and has a friend who lives in the utopian city of Geometrica. The stamps and posters used to promote Geometria inspirer Peter to move to their and we are able to see how the aesthetic architectural city changes the mood of Peter.

Using the questions supplied, I began to think about the personal life and character of Peter to help build his story;

Peter grew up and has always lived in a dystopian city (one of the
cities in which another group has created). He is in his mid 20's and is fed up of living in the same boring city with drab surroundings
all his life. This city tends to reflect the mundane life he has
lived, having boring cereals for breakfast such as toast or porridge,being conceived in a natural way, being a single child, not being in
love. Although he is a likeable guy, which is reflected in his
friendships due to his age he is at the point in his life where he
isn't happy with the same old life and wants to move to somewhere
that reflects his beliefs of a utopian city where everyone wants to
live a happier life and be surrounded by positive things.
Due to this he is quite materialistic, like Geometrica, he believes that beauty reinforces the wellness of a society.
He works in a factory in which he makes boxes for a living (again a job that reflects his dull life), through this job he met a friend in which moved to Geometrica, throughout this relationship Peter receives letters with the stamps and posters used to promote the utopian city and from this inspires him to begin the move into the city of the aesthetically beautiful.

As a group we wanted all the people that we were exploring with our storyboards to link one way or another to show the ins and outs and different view points of the people who travelled too and lived in Geometrica. Through Peter we explore the outsiders view of Geometrica, and how he aspires to live there. He views Geometrica as the amazing aesthetic city in where happiness can be attained, looking towards it as a place of hope and inspiration. With Georgia’s character of Polly we view the happy side to living in Geometrcia, where people love living there and love to show it off, we can notice this through the poster in which Polly sends to Peter, however through this character we begin to see a sinister side of Geometrica, where Polly has a designer baby (which Is betty’s character). We wanted to do this to show how slowly but surely the young people of the city are trying to make everything aesthetic and cover up all things ugly and old other than just the buildings. Someone away of this dystopian side of Geometrica is Amy’s character Ted, who is an old man who lived in the old non aesthetic Geometrica. Ted is unhappy with living in Geometrica as they have changed the city for the worse. He sees the new generation trying to make all things aesthetic and isn’t very approving of his grandson (betty’s character) being a designer baby. We also wanted to use Ted to show how although the buildings are pretty from the outside, on the inside they are still the same buildings as before, so Ted is still working the same boring job as he was previous, there has been no improvements.

To illustrate the day in the life of Peter Plain, I want to create a short comic strip that showed him moving from his unhappy state in the Dystopian city, to Geomtrica, inspired by the stamps and posters in which he received from his old work friend that already lives in Geometrica.
